So I've been joking about taking a rumspringa for awhile. The last two years of working on my master's degree have been pretty intense and I was looking to take a break once I graduated.
Oh, for those of you not living in southcentral Pennsylvania I should probably explain what a rumspringa is. In simplistic terms, it's a time when Amish teens get to relax the rules a bit and experience the outside world before they decide if they want to get baptized in the church. For me, it means having a little more fun than I did the last two years when I pretty much did homework every night.
Then in April, I found out my job was being centralized and I was told I would be laid off in June. That sounds like bad news, but it's all worked out pretty well. I was planning on leaving that job to move to Seattle and try my hand in the world outside of journalism anyway. So now, I have plenty of time for a proper rumspringa. I have trips planned and events with friends and I'm trying to squeeze in as much as I can before I head west. The next few months are going to be full of adventures and change and I figured I'd better document some of that.
So here it is. The Rumspringa Blog. Yeah, I don't know what's going to happen either.
